To designate that portion of East 15th Street between its intersection with Hull Street Road and its intersection with Maury Street, in honor of Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones.

WHEREAS, upon information and belief of the Council, Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones served the citizens of the Richmond area in various capacities, including as a Delegate to the Virginia General Assembly in 1993, and as the Mayor of the City of Richmond in 2008, having been elected to both posts on platforms of protecting the most vulnerable in the community, stimulating economic growth, creating jobs, and promoting programs for safe neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, upon information and belief of the Council, Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones served and continues to serve as a faith and community leader, most notably as the preacher and Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of South Richmond, a position he has held for 50 years; and
WHEREAS, upon information and belief of the Council, Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones, as part of his ministry and community outreach, was the founder of the South Richmond Senior Center and of the Imani Intergenerational Community Development Corporation, which developed an affordable housing project with 68 apartments and 23,000 square feet of retail space; and
WHEREAS, because this designation is honorary only, the provisions of sections 8-7 through 8-10 of the Code of the City of Richmond (2020), as amended, do not apply to the designation made hereby or to any signs erected pursuant to this ordinance;
NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY OF RICHMOND HEREBY ORDAINS:
? 1. Designation of Street Blocks for Honorary Name. The portion of East 15th Street between its intersection with Hull Street Road and its intersection with Maury Street shall be designated in honor of Dr. Dwight Clinton Jones pursuant to this ordinance.
