To designate the 500 block of North 2nd Street in honor of the late Neverett Eggleston. (6th District)

WHEREAS, upon information and belief of Council, Neverett Eggleston was born on September 14, 1898, in Henrico County, Virginia, and later worked as a chef at the Lakeside Country Club and at a restaurant he opened in Jackson Ward called the Lafayette; and
WHEREAS, upon information and belief of Council, Neverett Eggleston most notably managed Miller's Hotel and later purchased the building and renamed it Hotel Eggleston, which was listed in the 1947 edition of The Negro Motorist Green Book during the segregation era; and
WHEREAS, upon information and belief of Council, Neverett Eggleston passed away on December 5, 1996, and is buried at Saint John Baptist Church in the city of Richmond; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to memorialize Neverett Eggleston's many accomplishments and contributions to community life in the city by designating the 500 block of North 2nd Street in his honor as "Neverett Eggleston Plaza;" and
WHEREAS, because this designation is honorary only, the provisions of sections 8-7 through 8-10 of the Code of the City of Richmond (2020), as amended, do not apply to the designation made hereby or to any signs erected pursuant to this ordinance;
NOW, THEREFORE,
THE CITY OF RICHMOND HEREBY ORDAINS:
? 1. Designation of Street Block for Honorary Name. The 500 block of North 2nd Street shall be designated in honor of Neverett Eggleston as "Neverett Eggleston Plaza," pursuant to this ordinance.
? 2. Effect of Designation. The designation of the 500 block of North 2nd Street made pursuant to this ordinance shall be honorary only, shall not replace the existing name of the road, and shall have no effect on the address of any property with an address on the designated road.
